4 Signs of a Bad Duct Installation

Proper ductwork is essential to avoiding major indoor air quality issues. As our experienced technicians will explain, leaky or compromised ducts could lead to water damage, mold growth, and a host of other dangerous issues.

4 Signs of Poor Duct Installation You Need to Check

As Southern California leaders in HVAC technology and repair, we can quickly spot the signs of poor duct installation, including any of the following:

1. Discomfort

It goes without saying that the purpose of HVAC (otherwise known as Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) is to keep the home comfortable. One of the most obvious signs of faulty ductwork will be living areas that are too hot in the Summer months, and too chilly during the Winter. While there may be other technical explanations for this as well, our technicians will first and foremost take a look at the health of existing ducts – and faulty installation may be to blame for chronically uncomfortable room temperatures.

2. Misplaced Ducts

This may come as a shock to some, but HVAC ducts have no business in an attic, garage, crawlspace or other primal areas. The reason being, these areas are not climate-controlled and therefore place a great burden on ducts to keep air moving along at the proper temperature (a nearly impossible feat). While it may be necessary in some cases to place ducts in these areas, proper pre-planning is necessary to ensure airflow is not compromised.

3. Ducts Appear Tangled or Drooping

If ducts are not properly installed, they will over time appear to droop, become misplaced, dangle or become entangled. This is not ideal, and an experienced HVAC technician will always ensure that the delicate network of ducts is properly laid out and not compromised by overlap or disorganization. Further, ducts that are “stuffed together” with inadequate spacing can quickly become a safety issue. As well, aging ducts may actually include deadly insulants like asbestos or fiberglass, which must be handled and removed with care.

4. Rising Energy Bills

Perhaps one of the most frustrating aspects of poorly installed ductwork is increasingly rising energy bills. Many Southern California homeowners expect a slight uptick in energy costs during the blistering summer months. However, if energy expenses are creeping higher and higher each month, it may be time to examine the current system to ensure all is flowing properly. When ducts are leaking air, the central unit will work overtime to provide comfortable room temperature – resulting in unnecessarily steep energy costs.
